Building SaaS Like It's 2013 — And Why That's a Problem.

Still building SaaS like it’s 2013?

You don’t even have to think hard—most are.

→ Chasing features

→ Shipping buggy MVPs

→ Hoping retention and profitability “just happen”

That playbook barely worked then.

In 2025? It’s a guaranteed churn machine.

Sure, AI is making SaaS products smarter.

But is it making businesses better?

Some shiny tools are making headlines. But let’s be honest—what about the 95% of SaaS products that never get traction?

I posted about a founder yesterday on my feed — and it tells the story well.

Click here to read the full post.

He had everything: tech, team, traction. But still… zero retention.

His response? “Maybe we should add more features.”

That mindset is the trap. Thinking more features will fix what isn’t even measured.

And here’s the real kicker:

Founders with strong networks, funding, and great ideas are still making unaware mistakes — the kind that quietly bleed cash and kill momentum.

In 2025, it’s not about doing more — it’s about knowing more and moving creatively.

You can’t fix what you don’t understand.

Because diagnosing without clarity? That just makes the problem worse.

What Was Wrong with 2013 SaaS?

Let’s break it down:

1. MVP culture made speed > retention and profitability

Everyone rushed to "ship fast" without asking: Will they come back? Will they pay again?

2. "Build fast, break things" ignored user outcomes

Cool motto. Terrible for user trust. A glitchy first impression today? You’re done.

3. Founders tracked features shipped—not friction removed

UX hiccups, onboarding gaps, unmet expectations? Barely tracked. But hey, we shipped 5 new features last week…

4. Most products weren’t designed to handle scale

One good month, and everything broke—servers, support, systems. Growth revealed fragility, not strength.

5. Shipping buggy products became a badge of honor

But it’s not about speed. It’s about process. Anyone can move fast. Few move fast and sustainably.

6. Customer success and user psychology? Barely discussed.

Retention is emotional. Experience is psychological. But most SaaS teams are still thinking in dashboards, not dopamine.

In 2013, you could launch broken products and still win.

In 2025, your customer has 10 polished alternatives—and zero patience.

What to Do Instead: Engineer, Don’t Just Build

If you're still trying to win SaaS in 2025 by out-shipping your competitors—you're playing the wrong game.

Today, SaaS isn’t about who ships the most. It’s about who engineers the best experience.

Here’s how to think like a SaaS engineer—not just a founder:

✅ Ask yourself:

Did my product prove value on first touch?

First impressions aren’t just UX—they’re conversion engines.

Do I know exactly where users drop off—and why?

If you're not tracking user friction, you're shipping in the dark.

How many smart touchpoints bring them back?

Retention isn’t luck. It’s a system.

Engineer beyond the feature:

Work on dynamic scaling

Your product should handle 10 users or 10,000—with minimal cost spikes or downtime. Efficiency isn’t optional anymore.

Use data tracking in your favor

Track what matters: user journeys, friction points, time-to-value—not vanity metrics.

Understand customer psychology

Where do they hang out? What motivates them? Steal playbooks from outside your niche—fashion, gaming, fitness—where your users actually spend time and money.

Design for experience, not ego

Simplicity scales. Flashy features don’t.

SaaS in 2025 Isn’t About MVPs.

It’s not even about MVEs.

It’s about building your UFP — Ultimate Focused Product.

A product so dialed in… → It solves one painful problem → For one specific user → With one unforgettable experience

No fluff. No feature bloat. No guessing.

Because in today’s market:

🚫 You can’t win by being broad. ✅ You win by being brutally focused.

Stop building like it’s 2013. Start engineering your UFP like it’s your only shot.

Retention, revenue, and reputation will follow.
